Escrita por Mae Boren Axton y Tommy Durden, se cree que el tema fue inspirado por una noticia que publicó en 1955 el Miami Herald sobre un hombre que saltó desde la ventana de un hotel después de quemar todas las pruebas de su identidad. Esta historia ha sido desmentida muchas veces al no encontrarse pruebas de dicho artículo pero la canción sí que hizo triunfar a Elvis Presley, que vendió más de un millón de copias del single.
