La escribió Paul McCartney para consolar a Julian, el hijo de John Lennon, del divorcio de sus padres (John Lennon y su primer esposa Cynthia Powell). El título de la canción era inicialmente Hey Jules pero Paul McCartney la cambió a Jude porque sonaba mejor. En su niñez, Julian Lennon frecuentaba más a Paul McCartney que a su propio padre.
Como un dato importante sobre esto, Julian Lennon solo supo que la canción estaba escrita para él casi veinte años más tarde. Mucha gente, incluido John Lennon, pensaba que la canción era sobre John Lennon y su relación con Yoko.
