Esta novela se enmarca en el control total del estado a la población por medio de la información, la vigilancia y la represión. Este tema del poder absoluto se hace presente en la canción de la banda británica que hace parte de su sexto álbum Hail to the Thief publicado en 2003. El nombre del sencillo hace referencia directa al símbolo de la irrealidad que se explica en el libro como un adoctrinamiento que pasa por encima de la lógica.
